La Notte
La Notte
San Gimignano, Siena, Tuscany
30 X 30 X 1.5 in
Acrylic on canvas, painting continues on sides
It is almost nighttime and the sky is turning a deeper blue, moment by moment. The lights can been seen at the summit of each medieval tower of the ancient fortress of San Gimignano in Tuscany. Splashes of light are visible from the tiny villages surrounding the walled hilltop city. The colours are still vivid purples, golds, greens, blues and reds all varied at this magical time of day until they meet a stand of dark fairly uniform trees in the middle ground of the landscape.
The classic red poppies in the foreground are gargantuan as are the grasses which rustle in the evening breezes. This area of the canvas is awash with a variety of colours - blues , burnt sienna, greens - dark and light - and even dashes of turquoise in this late May evening .
The sky and the foreground seem to dance in a harmonious way so that one could not exist without the other. A mysterious ambience is created.
